Baby grands need specialist handling
A baby grand is the most common grand piano in homes, flats and music studios across London and Surrey. It may be smaller than a full grand, but it weighs between 200 and 400 kg, its soundboard cannot be jarred without risking detuning or cracking, and a lacquered or polished rim scratches easily if the instrument is handled like ordinary furniture.
PianoSpeed move baby grands of every make, including Steinway Model S, Yamaha GB1K, Kawai GL-10, Bechstein A, Bluthner Model 6, Bosendorfer 155 and Fazioli F156. Get an instant fixed price online in under 60 seconds and book your slot with a fully insured, piano-trained crew.

HOW IT IS DONE
How a baby grand piano is moved
A baby grand is moved on its side, not flat. The crew remove the music desk, then the three legs and the pedal lyre, and stand the body on its straight side on a padded skid board. The body is wrapped in a triple-thickness fitted transit cover and strapped securely before it is carried upright to the van and braced for transit.
The three legs and the pedal lyre are each protected in individual padded bags, then stowed together in a heavy duty crate so nothing shifts on the road. At the destination the process is reversed: the body is unloaded and set on the skid board, the legs and lyre are refitted, and the piano is placed in the room you choose. It requires a trained crew because the soundboard, action and finished surfaces are easily damaged when the instrument is off its legs and at an angle.
ACCESS AND STAIRS
Tight doorways, stairs and upper-floor rooms
Baby grands are often in living rooms or conservatories behind a single door, a tight hallway, or a turn at the bottom of a staircase. At the destination the challenge is the same in reverse. We assess the access as part of the booking process so nothing catches us out on the day.
Stairs are chargeable and are calculated automatically in your online quote from the floor level and whether a passenger lift is available. Where a baby grand cannot go up or down the stairs, for example a first-floor flat with a narrow stairwell or a listed building with restricted access, we arrange a crane or external hoist to lift the instrument through a window or balcony, with the method and price confirmed before the day.

TRANSIT PROTECTION
Triple-thickness transit covers and padded crates
Every baby grand travels in a top of the range, triple-thickness, fitted transit cover made for the instrument, not loose blankets or generic furniture pads. The three legs and pedal lyre each go into their own individual padded bags and are stowed together in a heavy duty crate for additional in-transit protection.
We move on padded skid boards and use stair-climbers and spider dollies for controlled handling on steps, tight corners and uneven surfaces. This is the level of care a specialist piano mover provides and a general removals firm does not.
