What is a piano skid board and why does it matter?

A piano skid board is a purpose-built padded board on which a piano travels during a move. It is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a specialist mover's set, and its absence is one of the clearest signs that a crew is not actually specialist.

What a skid board is

At its simplest, a skid board is a flat, rigid board with a padded surface. For piano moving, it is sized to support the full body of an upright or, in the case of a grand, the full side of the instrument when the grand is stood on its straight edge for transit. The padding protects the case and finish from the board itself, and the board distributes the weight of the piano evenly across its surface.

A proper piano skid board is reinforced to handle the weight of the instrument, typically 200 to 500 kilos depending on the piano, without flexing or splitting. It is fitted with handles or recesses that allow the crew to grip and manoeuvre it safely. Many are fitted with castors on the underside to allow the piano to be rolled across floors, though these are locked off when the board is on stairs or in the van.

Why it matters for a grand piano

A grand piano is moved on its side, not flat. Before the body goes onto the skid board, the crew remove the legs and the pedal lyre. The body is then carefully lowered onto the board so that its straight side, the spine of the rim, rests on the padding. This is the correct position for transit because it keeps the weight on the strongest part of the instrument.

Moving a grand without a skid board means resting the instrument on blankets on the floor of a van, on its castors, or in some other improvised arrangement. None of these correctly supports the weight or protects the finish, and an unbraced grand in a van is a risk to the instrument and to the crew when the vehicle moves.

Why it matters for an upright piano

An upright travels in an upright position, but it still needs to be strapped onto a skid board during loading and unloading and when it is not yet secured in the van. The board gives a controlled, padded base to work from and allows the crew to roll the piano across surfaces without the castors catching on floor coverings or thresholds. On stairs, the board becomes part of the controlled braking system.

What this tells you about a mover

A crew without a skid board is not equipped to move pianos safely. This is one of the questions worth asking any mover before you book: do you use a padded piano skid board? A genuine specialist will give a specific answer. A general removals crew may not know what a skid board is.
