A concert grand is a different proposition
A concert grand typically measures between 270 and 310 cm in length and can weigh anywhere from 450 to over 600 kg depending on the make and model. The Steinway Model D, Yamaha CFX, Bechstein D-282, Bluthner Model 1, Bosendorfer 290 Imperial and Fazioli F308 are among the instruments we move regularly. These are not just large pianos: they carry enormous value, require a full crew and specialist lifting equipment, and need to be at pitch within days of arriving at a stage.
PianoSpeed are trusted by concert venues, opera houses, recording studios, conservatoires, piano dealers and private collectors across London and the UK. Get an instant fixed price online in under 60 seconds at book.pianospeed.com, or call us on 020 7164 0000 to discuss a venue move.

HOW IT IS DONE
How a concert grand is moved
A concert grand is moved on its side. The crew remove the music desk, then the three legs and the pedal lyre, and stand the body on its straight side on a padded skid board. Because the body of a full concert grand is considerably longer and heavier than a baby grand, the crew complement is larger and the skid boards are heavier duty. The body is wrapped in a triple-thickness fitted transit cover and strapped securely, then carried upright to the van and braced for transit.
The legs, lyre and lid fittings are each protected in individual padded bags and stowed together in a heavy duty crate. At the destination the process is reversed and the piano is reassembled and positioned on stage or in the room of your choice. Concert grands require a minimum of three trained crew members for a ground-level move and more where stairs or a crane are involved.
VENUES AND STAGES
Stage deliveries and venue moves
Moving a concert grand into a concert hall, recording studio or opera house requires more than the right van and crew. Stage access varies widely: some venues have a dedicated piano bay and loading dock, others require the instrument to be lifted via a goods lift or carried through the auditorium. We assess the access route before every venue move and confirm the method and the timing with your stage or technical manager.
We work to your venue's schedule. If you need the instrument in position for a morning rehearsal, we time the delivery and reassembly accordingly. Stage and backstage lifts are chargeable and included in your online quote where the access details are entered at the time of booking.

TRANSIT PROTECTION
Protection that matches the instrument's value
Every concert grand travels in a top of the range, triple-thickness, fitted transit cover. Fitted covers stay in place on the road and protect the rim, the lid and the keybed in a way that loose blankets never can. The three legs and the pedal lyre go into individual padded bags, stowed in a heavy duty crate so no fitting knocks against another on the road.
We move on padded skid boards and use stair-climbers and spider dollies for controlled handling on stage ramps, steps and uneven surfaces. If you have a Fazioli, a Bosendorfer Imperial or any other high value instrument, please tell us the make, model and serial number at the time of booking so we can confirm the right crew configuration and cover.
CRANE AND HOIST LIFTS
Crane and hoist lifts for upper-floor spaces
Some concert grands need to go to a first or second-floor music room, a recording studio above street level, or an upper-floor conservatory. Where the stairwell is too narrow or the angle too tight to carry a full concert grand safely, we arrange a crane or external hoist to lift it through a window or balcony opening.
We assess the access, plan the method and confirm the cost in advance, so there are no surprises on the day. Stairs and lifts are chargeable and the cost is calculated automatically when you enter the floor level in your online quote. You see the full fixed price before you confirm.
