The structure of a grand piano case
The case of a grand piano is not symmetrical. The lid, the curved treble side of the outer rim, and the keyboard end are all relatively lightweight parts of the casing designed for appearance and acoustic performance, not for load-bearing. The bottom of the case, above the pedals and between the legs, carries the iron plate and the heavy cross-bracing that anchor the string tension. Why not flat on its back?
